THE AVERAGE AMERICAN SPENT 7 HOURS ON FACEBOOK IN JANUARY 2010. THAT IS PRETTY ASTONISHING. HOW DID THIS COLLEGE PICTURE SHARING WEB SITE THING BLOW UP INTO SOMETHING ASTRONOMICAL? IT SEEMED TO HIT MY GENERATION FIRST. PEOPLE 17 TO 24 BACK IN 2007. BY 2009 IT STARTED TO BECOME COOL AMONG OLDER PEOPLE. MY AUNT CATHY ADDED ME AS A FRIEND AND SHE’S NEAR 60 YEARS OLD. AS IT SLOWLY BECAME A SOCIAL NORM FOR EVERYONE SOON LITTLE KIDS STARTED GETTING INTO THE FACEBOOK REALM. OH, LITTLE BILLY WILSON AGE 7 WANTS TO BE MY FRIEND? WEIRD. AS THE FRIENDS STARTED ROLLING IN FROM ALL EDGES OF MY PAST THE MORE I STARTED TO REALIZE THAT THIS WEBSITE ISN’T KIDDING AROUND. IT IS INDEED A “POWERHOUSE.” I DON’T THINK THIS THING IS GOING ANYWHERE SOON. IT’S BECOMING ALMOST A FORCE OF HABIT IN EVERYONE’S LIVES. IT SEEMS LIKE THE FIRST THING EVERYONE DOES WHEN THEY FIRE UP THEIR LAPTOP  OR SIT DOWN IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY AND OTHER LABS IS CHECK OUT THE NEWEST FEEDS ON FACEBOOK. TWITTER GOT PRETTY BIG TOO, BUT I DON’T KNOW IF IT WILL EVER CATCH THE GLOBAL SENSATION OF FACEBOOK.

IT PASSED YAHOO AND BECAME THE SECOND MOST VISITED WEBSITE IN THE WORLD LAST YEAR AND IT HASN’T SLOWED DOWN SINCE THEN. GOOGLE STILL REIGNS AT THE TOP OF THE INTERNET KINGDOM BUT AT THIS RATE THESE TWO JUGGERNAUTS MIGHT BE BATTLING IT OUT IN THE NEAR FUTURE FOR THAT THRONE. BACK IN THE DAY MYSPACE AND FACEBOOK WERE AMONG THE SAME POPULARITY. WHAT MAKES FACEBOOK SO MUCH BETTER THAT IT GETS EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE TO SIGN UP? I NEVER HAD A MYSPACE SO I REALLY DON’T KNOW. BUT I WILL ADMIT THAT FACEBOOK IS PRETTY AWESOME. WHY ELSE WOULD SO MANY PEOPLE BE ADDICTED TO IT? I DON’T THINK I’M ADDICTED TO IT PER SAY, BUT A LARGE MAJORITY OF MY FRIENDS MUST BE BECAUSE WHENEVER I’M ON IT, SO ARE THE SAME PEOPLE.

WHAT ABOUT THIS PRIVACY CONCERN THOUGH? DAAAAMN! YOU’RE TELLING ME THEY CAN SEE EVERYTHING I’M TALKING ABOUT? EVEN THOSE 2:00 A.M. PRIVATE CHATS I HAVE WITH THAT ONE CHICK I WORK WITH? THE FACEBOOK PEOPLE CAN. YOU GOTTA BE REALLY CAREFUL WHEN YOUR SELECTING YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS TOO. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TO BE FRIENDS WITH THE PEOPLE BEFORE YOU LET THEM LOOK AT YOUR PROFILE. FUTURE EMPLOYERS MAY LOOK INTO THIS AND IF THEY CAN WALK RIGHT INTO YOUR PROFILE WITH NO RESTRAINT, THAT COULD COST YOU A JOB. WHO TOOK YURRR JUBB? FACEBOOK? NO! IT’S REALLY YOUR FAULT. YOU PUT THAT STUFF ON THERE, YOU GOTTA ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES.

THIS GETS ME TO THE POINT I’M TRYING TO MAKE AND WHAT THIS PROJECT ENTAILS. MARKETERS HAVE THE POWER TO ACCESS YOUR ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES. THIS IS A BIG REASON WHY SITES LIKE FACEBOOK HAVE GOTTEN SO BIG. MARKETING CORPORATIONS PAY BIG MONEY TO FACEBOOK TO ACCESS INFORMATION REGARDING IT’S CUSTOMERS. WE PUT THE INFORMATION ABOUT OURSELVES ONLINE FOR GOD’S SAKE. WE’VE PRETTY MUCH DONE THEIR WORK FOR THEM. GAIL NEWTON LIKES THE BAND SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, PRETTY SOON GAIL SEES ADVERTISEMENTS REGARDING THAT BAND. A TEE SHIRT OF SIMON AND GARFUNKEL SHOWS UP ON THE SIDE OF HER FACEBOOK SCREEN. SHE CLICKS ON IT. THESE GUYS HAVE DONE THEIR JOB WELL BECAUSE THIS STUFF WORKS. WE ARE ALL “LIKERS” NOW. WE SHARE OUR LIKES WITH THE WORLD AND NOW WE CAN’T ESCAPE THE NUMEROUS AND OVERPOWERING ADVERTISING OF THESE MARKETERS. THIS PROJECT WILL HOPEFULLY REACH SOME CONCLUSIONS AND ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THY WHYS? HOWS? AND WHENS? REGARDING MARKETING AND SOCIAL MEDIA.
